Now that you have learned much about the theory of Plate Tectonics, are there any oceanic landforms that are unexplained? What is responsible for the formation of Barbados? How about the Ninetyeast Ridge in the Indian Ocean? Why does Bermuda exist? Do some quick research on one of these and share your discoveries.

FORMATION OF BARBADOS.
To the east of the west Indie Islands in Atlantic Ocean, sits the Island of Barbados. The
Barbados is the most Eastern Island of English Caribbean with a latitude of 13 10’ N and a
longitude of 59 32’ W. It’s formation came about as a result of natural impact occurring
between Caribbean Plates and Atlantic Plates. Over millions of years, a gradual accumulation of
oceanic sediments including regular tectonic uplift prompted the Atlantic Plate to be pushed
under Caribbean Plate forcing the Barbados to surface (Barker, L., & McFarlane, N. ,1980).
Unlike the Eastern islands of the Caribbean, the Island evolved in accretionary prism not
magmatic arc. However, the Barbados Island never took its present shape at once. It presented
itself as a gradual rising when the coral reefs were developed in clear waters surrounding an
exposed part of the Island’s ridge. The island became enlargened by tectonic uplift at an interval
of 500 000 -120 000 years. This pushed the reefs out of the shallow water.
The activity of the Barbados geology also provides a clear explanation as to why there
are so many fascinating and beautiful caves, most popular being the Harrison Caves. The fact is...
