Mary Shelley was born on August 30, 1797, in London, England. In 1818, she published
her most famous novel, Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus (Rothwell, 2015). It soon was
published and became a huge success. She wrote several other books, including Valperga (1823),
The Last Man (1826), the autobiographical Lodore (1835) and Mathilde, which was published
after her death. The wrongful execution of Justine in the novel suggests the justice system was
flawed during that period and this was another statement Shelly was making (Rothwell, 2015).
This justice system has not been entirely changed since then. The fact that the monster was so
criticized shows the way a person looked had a significant influence in how society treated a
person. This was a groundbreaking novel symbolically making society think of how middle and
lower classes personal were treated.
Moreover, Washington Irving was born in New York City in 1783. He achieved
worldwide fame for the fictional stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”
depicting early American life of the ordinary people. He was the most famous American writer
of the early 1800s (“Washington," 2016). Irving was also the U.S. ambassador to Spain and
made history by stressing the need for stricter copyright laws before his death. He wrote a
collection of stories and essays that became The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. This
book was published in several installments over two years and made him a relevant writer both
in England and the U. S. (“Washington,” 2016). Like Shelley, Irving was also concerned with
the human condition. This is symbolic of Rip Van Winkle and his sleeping for 20 years.
Each of these authors had something in common. They all wrote symbolic literature that
has a similar theme. It shows the importance of appreciating every moment in life and taking
every opportunity to better him or herself instead of wallowing in self-pity and the criticism of

others. Therefore, one does not understand a person until he or she has walked in his or her
shoes. In this world of instant gratification, it is time for people to stop being critical of others
and look within themselves to try and be a better person. Their works in literature, spirit, and
ideology of the times helped to give shape to pre-eminent writers of the 21st-century.
Mary Shelley was a successful artist despite many challenges she faced throughout her
life. She did not give up until she achieved her aim. Shelley’s struggle between a monster and
her creator, which has been an enduring part of her popularly, regarded Western Canon artist
culture. However, she did not attend formal education. Her breakthrough in literature writings is
remarkable and successful in the 21st century. It was roughly a century after her passing that
one of her novels, Mathilde, was finally released in the 1950s.
Her legacy, however, remains the classic tale of Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus
because of humorous or spoofs inspiration to readers. This book also was proved to be a huge
success to Shelley and society. The artist Southern Right Whale and Diver Brian Skerry endured
some of the same but very different trials as Shelley did in her life. He wanted to understand the
sea in a different perspective, so he venturing through the dark depths with his camera. He fought
to make his dream come true no matter how hard or scary he knew it could become. However,
those in society always find their creative abilities to represent what they feel artistical.
Brian Skerry’s ocean soul is not only what it sounds like, but the ocean was also his soul.
He lived to venture into the ocean just as Shelley lived to create her works of art artistically.
They both established...
