CURRICULUM MAPPING
2
Many school districts in the USA are currently implementing curriculum mapping as one
of the strategies to ensure that the curriculum is streamlined, gaps, misalignments, and
redundancies are identified and addressed. The process ensures that the coherence of the course
is improved and its effectiveness.
School District
The district selected for this reflection exercise is Shelby County Schools, a school
district in Memphis, Tennessee. Shelby County Schools is recognized as one of the 25 largest
public school districts in the United States of America and the largest Tennessee. The committee
formed the district in 2013 due to a merger between the two smaller districts of Shelby County
Schools and Memphis City Schools (CRPE, 2014). A look at the school district's demographics
shows that it serves more than 200 schools with over 100,000 students. Statistics from the
Shelby County Schools website show that the district has 208 schools composed of elementary,
middle, high, adult, alternative, CTC, special, charter, virtual, early learning, and K-8. The total
number of employees is 14,200, while the district's total budget is $1.44 billion (Shelby County
Schools, 2021).
Further, a look at the student population shows that the district has 113 200 students
divided between Pre-K with 5, 600, 89,900 in K-12 non-chartered schools and 17 700 in K-12
Chartered schools. There are approximately 57,000 economically disadvantaged students, 13,000
with disabilities, while 6,800 are in the empowerment zone. Ten thousand five hundred students
are English language learners, 2,650 are gifted, 10 800 are in the iZone, while 11,500 are
optional (Shelby County Schools, 2021).
