The apple company gave the chance for students in the public schools of Harlem to win a
twenty million dollar lottery in an attempt to show that any child in Harlem can be able to
succeed in life regardless of the life conditions in the area.
Being in the county of Harlem where 50% of African American graders are basically or
rather functionally illiterate, I had minimal hope of ever succeeding in life. The traditional
system of public schools proved to possess failures, forcing hundreds of thousands of parents to
attempt to flee the system every year. Personally I had no choice but to endure the system due to
lack of funding. This was until I heard on television that the giant apple company was going to
make one of the students in our area a mega millionaire so that they could prove that every
student that there is always a chance of success in life despite the conditions and situations they
face. The company visited each school and gave the management raffle tickets which had a
number and the tickets were distributed to every pupil in each school. To prevent theft or any
mishaps, a system was created that had a database that held every students name and against it
the code of the ticket they possessed. This eliminated issues in case the ticket was lost and later
found in another person’s possession. It was on a Monday afternoon when all these activities
were happening. After receiving the ticket I read through the numbers and went through the
registration process just like the rest of the students, this was to get the feeling that I was not left
out of the process. In my heart however I kept telling myself that this was another scheme to give
false hope to the less fortunate so after this process I threw away the ticket. The probability of
winning the lottery to me was almost zero because I saw the immense number of students
participating and all hope slowly faded away. After on...
