Description

Describe what might be expected for Ms. Shapiro (diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in each of the three stages of adapting to her chronic disabling condition.

2. What might be the role of occupational therapy and the OT practitioner during each of these stages?

3. How could an occupational therapist assist Ms. Shapiro with improving both her “life satisfaction” and her “quality of life?” Your answer should clearly convey the difference between these two concepts.

Which OT evaluation tools would you recommend using with Mr. Kelley (diagnosed with Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA = Stroke),

2. What types of information would you expect utilization of these tools to yield?

3. What suggested OT intervention strategies would be relevant in the case of Mr. Kelley?

4. How would these interventions emanate from the information gleaned from using your recommended OT evaluation tools?

5. What favorable outcomes might you expect subsequent to your recommended interventions?

The Role of Occupational Therapy in Mental Health and General Health.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a degenerative disease that occurs progressively in stages.
The first and least detectable is Primary Progressive MS (PPMS) which damaged to the CNS
is too diffuse to be flagged by an MRI scan. The second is Relapse-Remission MS (RRMS)
in which damage is substantially evident in attacks and symptoms. The last, worst and to be
delayed as much as possible is Secondary Progressive MS (SPMS) in which damage is so
severe that disabilities are nearly permanent.
There are some expectations for patients diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis like Ms.
Shapiro in the three stages. To adapt to MS it is important the patient adheres to a strategic
nutritional program rich in vitamin D at both PPMS and RRMS stages. This keeps the
progression of the condition towards SPMS at a slow rate. Also keeping a flexible approach
to life improves on life satisfaction especially in RRMS and SPMS. In addition, learning how
to express negative emotions brought about by challenges of living with MS without being
overwhelmed by them. Lastly is the maintenance of a reasonable quality of life. That is
reasonable ways of getting around daily tasks.
There are a number of roles that Occupational Therapy (O.T) and an O.T practitioner
play in the above stages of MS. The first being improving the function of the patient in dayto-day roles and activities. Secondly helping the patient in gradually becoming more
independent with time. And finally improving the quality of life despite MS symptoms.

with MS. The other thing is to aid her to become gradually independent through supportive
exercises modified to enable her to get around daily roles. Life quality is the efficiency of
meeting these needs and wants of daily roles and tasks. An O.T practitioner to improve life
quality first educates and supports the patient in transitioning to new alternative means in
