The following paper outlines three persuasive topics that can be chosen for a persuasive
speech.
1. Avoiding drunk driving
Drunk driving has been a major causative of road accidents killing thousands of
people every year. Life is so precious and if we can put some efforts to avoid these
unnecessary deaths, we will be making our roads safe to every user. Together we can put an
end to drunk driving.
This is a persuasive topic because many people are well informed that one should not
drink and drive but still this has been happening in our day to day lives. Furthermore, there is
the Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of less than 0.08% that is not considered illegal but some
drivers still exceed this level. Therefore, there is need to persuade people to avoid drunk
driving to reduce or prevent some of the accidents attributed to drunk driving.
Satisfaction step
We can employ various strategies to prevent or reduce this national problem of drunk
driving. Doing this will save the lives of innocent citizens who are involved in accidents
caused by drunk driving. We should uphold zero tolerance not only for the safety of others
but for our safety as well. Embracing the already existing drunk driving rules will much help
to solve this problem instead of escaping from the authorities. We may escape authorities
when drunk driving but we can escape the consequences which follows. Our laws allow a

0.08% of blood alcohol level and zero tolerance to those less than 21 years. Embracing these
laws will save our people from premature deaths. In the effort of fighting against driving, let
us obey the sobriety checkpoints since the police can use these checkpoints to save your life
from a drunk driving accident by intercepting the drunk drivers (Taylor, L., & Oberman, S.
2006). The mass media should also spread messages on the dangers and the legal
consequences for the drunk drivers. Such mass media campaigns will be very persuasive to
our drivers not to drink and drive. We should also encourage the revocation or suspension of
administrative licence. When the police take away the licences of the drivers testing above
the blood alcohol content or who refuse to carry out the testing, let’s congratulate them since
no one knows whether such drivers could crash into us or to our loved ones. There is also the
need for our driving institutions to put in place school based instructional programs specially
to teach teens the dangers involved when riding with drunk drivers (Jacobs, J. B. 1989). If
we embrace all the above measures, surely we can totally change the safety in our road for a
better tomorrow of each and every one of us.
2. Legalization of medical marijuana.
Many people believe that marijuana is harmful to human health but the future of some
patients depends on medical marijuana in relieving the symptoms to various illnesses.
This is a persuasive topic because the issue of legalization of medical marijuana has
been surrounded by controversy. Many people have not yet embraced that marijuana can be
used for medicine in in patients with diseases such as AIDS, cancer, epilepsy among others
whereby the normal pharmaceuticals have been of no help such patients. If people can be
persuaded on the role of marijuana in treatment, then they can support its legalization for
medical use.

Satisfaction step.
This step outlines some of the solutions to the problem of illegalization of medical
marijuana as an alternative medicine that can be prescribed by doctors without colliding
with the law.
The benefits of using marijuana as a medicine outweigh the risks by far. Various
studies with evidence have proved that marijuana can be very beneficial to the patients
who have been suffering from various illnesses such as cancer, AIDS, epilepsy,
glaucoma, nausea from medication, spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis among many
other terminal conditions including seizure disorders. These studies have proved that the
properties contained in marijuana can relief the chronic pain that is associated with these
illnesses (Boire, R. G., & Feeney, K. 2007). Therefore, supporting the legalization of
medical marijuana will be very beneficial to the patients suffering from all these diseases.
Medical marijuana has been proved to be safer than pharmaceuticals. Marijuana is
natural but pharmaceuticals contain various chemicals which come along with various
side effects to the patients who rely on them. In addition to this, the commonly used pain
killers can be somehow addictive to the patients while various mainstream drugs have
been found to cause gastrointestinal issues, organ failure, allergic reactions and
sometimes death from their complications or overdose (Benson, J. A., Joy, J. E., &
Watson, S. J. 1999). If medical marijuana can help to solve all these, there is need for the
consideration of its legalization.
The legalization of medical marijuana would advance the research in effective uses
for marijuana as a medicine. Therefore, there is need to keep in consideration all the

above when the issue of legalization of medical marijuana arises to accommodate the
needs of each patient.
3. The need for gun control
Many innocent lives are being lost because of failure to properly control guns in the
country. Although the passion of guns is also importance for our security, there is the
need to ensure that these guns don’t into the hands of criminals as well as children
who may use them irresponsibly.
This is a persuasive topic since the law have provided individuals with the rights to
possess guns for purpose of their security. However, considering the various recent activities
of people using guns to kill innocent people either because they are criminals or for
vengeance reasons calls for control of guns in the country to avoid such instances.
Satisfaction step
This step outlines some of the solutions to the problem of improper control of guns to
avoid its possession by people who can cause violence to the public or use them to for
other purposes other than their security.
There is need for the establishment of a culture of gun safety. This can start by
insisting on mandatory licensing and training which should go along with secure and safe gun
storage. Regular refreshment on gun training to the gun owners as well as renewal of gun
permits will be of much importance in solving this problem of gun violence (Webster, D. W.,
& Vernick, J. S. 2013).

PERSUASIVE SPEECH TOPICS
Most of the gun violence incidents have been attributed to the mental health of the
perpetrators. There is the need of ensuring an accessible, high quality and a culturally
competent mental health treatment as the ownership of guns is rising. There is need to ensure
that gun owners reduce stigma that is associated with mental health needs (Kopel, D. B.
(1991). There is also the need to reduce the exposure of children to violence so that we can
address the impact of trauma experienced by our children.
There is also to tighten the gun laws. The high capacity magazines should be banned
and expand the 24-hour gun background check so that it can be universal. We must also
emphasis that assault weapons should not have their way in schools, movie theaters, nor in
our communities and streets. We must also support the implementation of a comprehensive
plan to prevent gun violence. We must therefore recognize that gun violence is a critical and
a preventable problem that is a leading cause of premature deaths in the nation and hence and
develop strategies to prevent it just as the other causes of deaths.
