Introduction
The American Association of Nurse Practitioners defines a nurse practitioner as an
autonomous and licensed clinician whose core focus includes the prevention and
management of health care conditions.
Nurse practitioners are advanced practice registered nurses who have earned the
bare minimum requirement of a master's degree and any other additional form of
training in the medical field.
In most jurisdictions, the nurse practitioner's basic training curriculums cover areas
such as basic infection prevention, coordination of patient care, and the promotion
of health.
History of the Nurse Practioner Role
In the United States, the advanced nurse practice concept in today's civilization was
introduced in the mid-1960s, following a nationwide shortage in the number of
physicians.
In early 1966, Henry Silver, a medical doctor, and Loretta Ford, a nurse, worked
closely and came up with the first formal graduate certificate program for nurse
practitioners in the United States.
Elliot Richardson, the then secretary of health, education and welfare, later presented
an official recommendation to expand the scope of nursing practice and have nurses
serve as the key providers of primary care.
