Cultural competency refers to a set of consistent attitudes, actions as well as policies that
normally come together in a system and make the system work efficiently in cross cultural
circumstances. There are five essential components that make a system to become more
culturally competent and they are as follows: having knowledge of culture that is
institutionalized, valuing diversity, being aware of the dynamics essential when cultures interact,
having the capacity for cultural self-evaluation as well as developing adaptations to service
delivery while at the same time demonstrating an understanding of cultural diversity. The five
components of cultural competence should be demonstrated at each and every level of an
organization.
