Cervidil
Cervidil is a medication that gets used for the initiation and continuation of the cervix's
ripening in women who are pregnant or, in the near term, who have a medical condition for labor
induction. The medication is administered through the vaginal route. This medication entails
freezing Cervidil until the time of usage, insertion of 10mg of Cervidil immediately after the
removal of its packaging, intravaginally, and removal 12 hours later on the onset of labor
(Penfield & Wing, 2017). This medication's side effects include raising intraocular pressure and
pupil constriction in patients with Glaucoma can cause Amniotic fluid embolism, Disseminated
Intravascular Coagulation, Uterine Hypertonicity, and Uterine Tachysytole.
Magnesium Sulfate (also used postpartum)
Magnesium Sulphate is used in stopping preterm labor and preventing seizures that are
related to pre-eclampsia. This medication gets administered using the intravenous or
intramuscular route. In stopping preterm labor, 4-6 g IV over 20 minutes gets administered as
the loading dose, 2-4 g/hr IV as maintenance for 12 to 24 hours after the contractions have
ceased. The medication cannot be used for more than 5 to 7 days as it may have adverse
reactions if so. Respiratory depression is the significant side effect of this medication.
