The issue of suffering looms large in many theological discussions, and few works are as directly germane to the subject as the book of Job. In this assignment, you will try your hand at interpreting a biblical theme by writing a paper that compares and contrasts the various voices in the book of Job as they wrestle with human suffering. This reflection assignment will constitute 15% of your overall grade. Purpose: This assignment is designed to help you see how different biblical books (or voices within a single book) address a problem, in this case, human suffering. Skills: This assignment should help you develop the ability to recognize diverse views among biblical authors or voices, analyze the viewpoint of a biblical author or voice, and compare and contrast viewpoints in written form. Tasks: Read chapters 1-2; 4–5; 9-10, 38–41; and 42 of the book of Job. Identify who is speaking in each passage (narrator, character, more than one, etc.). Identify how each passage expresses a view (or views) of human suffering: What or who causes suffering? How is human suffering justified? Identify similarities and differences between these views. Compare and contrast the arguments made by the various voices. Write up your research in clear, error-free English. Criteria: Your paper will be evaluated based on the following criteria: Were you able to identify various viewpoints? How well did you explain, compare, and contrast the viewpoints? Did you use correct English grammar, syntax, spelling, and punctuation? The following guidelines will walk you through your completion of this assignment: Most students will opt to write a traditional paper. Should you feel so inclined, you are welcome to be creative in your presentation of the material. You may, for example, compose your paper in the form of a letter to a friend or family member, a sermon or a Bible study lesson, a play, etc. Should you choose a more creative format, be careful to avoid the trap of choosing style over substance. Your paper should be 1500-2000 words in length and must be uploaded to Canvas as a Word document or PDF (Note: Google Docs will not work). The paper should be Times New Roman font, 1” margins, double-spaced, without a title page. As any college-level paper should, your paper will be graded for correct use of English grammar, syntax, spelling, and punctuation. Use your best writing skills and take time to visit the Communications Resource Center for additional help. Cite biblical passages as follows: Job 3 (for just the third chapter of Job), Job 3-4 (for the third and fourth chapters of Job), Job 3:1 (for the first verse of Job chapter 3), Job 3:1-2 (for the first two verses of Job chapter 3), etc. While you are encouraged to consult the introduction to Job and the annotations by David J.A. Clines in the NOAB, no further research or external reading beyond the book of Job and our class discussions is required. You may find the various commentaries in Samford library to be helpful as you consider the subject. In the end, however, this paper must consist of your own work. Your paper must be uploaded to Canvas by 11:59 pm on Sunday, March 7.

Chapter One and Two
Narrator
The narrator of the passages in chapters one and two of the book of Job is voice one. The
voice begins by narrating the story of a man named Job, who was upright and blameless before
God. The first two chapters explain how the suffering of Job started. In chapters one and two, the
voice speaks, explaining the suffering that followed Job despite being a God-fearing man.
Character
The characters in chapter one and two are:
(a) Job- he is the main character in the book of Job. The entire story in the book of Job
revolves around him, and he is the one undergoing suffering.
(b) Seven sons and three daughters who belonged to Job. The sons took turns holding
festivals at home and always invited their sisters to participate in the feasts.
(c) God –The story of Job also removes around God because God allowed Satan to test Job
and see how strong his faith was.
(d) Angels-They came to represent themselves before God, one of the angels of Satan. Satan
placed Job into a test and made him suffer greatly.
(e) Jobs Wife is also a character mentioned in Chapter two of the book of Job.
(f) Jobs three friends-Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar.
Views of Human Suffering
In chapters one and two, the suffering of Job was caused by Satan, who God
permitted to test his faith. In chapter one and two, human suffering is viewed as when one
loses their treasured properties. Job owned many sheep, oxen, camels, and many servants.
His suffering began when he received the report that all his animals were killed. Human
