Description

I’m studying for my Computer Systems class and don’t understand how to answer this. Can you help me study?

Initial Post:

You have been hired as a consultant by Mercury USA, a small logistics company that migrated to Microsoft Office 365. Mercury needs your advice because their Cloud Administrator recently left the company, but she left the credentials and other vital information related to Microsoft 365 accounts was documented.

The CEO of Mercury has provided the following information.

  • Microsoft Tenant Name: mercuryusa.onmicrosoft.com
  • Procured 25 Microsoft 365 licenses

The CEO wants you to address the following items.

  • Change the tenant name from mercuryusa.onmicrosoft.com to mercuryusa.com
  • Microsoft DNS servers to host the zone name
  • Explain the nature of at least one user account that will have global administrator rights for the Mercury USA tenant.
  • Users who have left the organization still have Microsoft 365 licenses while the new employees do not.

Post One (Steven):

  • Change the tenant name from mercuryusa.onmicrosoft.com to mercuryusa.com

You must log into your Microsoft 365 account and go to the Admin center. On the left side find Settings, click it, and then click Domains. This will take you to the Domains page. Here you can add the new domain you want (mercurysa.com), assuming you have already purchased it. If you have not there is an option to buy a domain on the page. When you have added the domain, click it, and set it as the default. You cannot change any names of the domains once they are created, including the initial mecuryusa.onmicoroft.com. (Domains FAQ, 2020) So be sure you have the name you want. Check for typos and foolishness.

  • Microsoft DNS servers to host the zone name

You must first create the DNS zone you want to host by logging into your Azure portal account and search for DNS zones in the search bar. Click it and the click the create button. Enter the name of your zone, the location of the Resource group, and the name of the resource group. You then retrieve the DNS zone from the All-resources tab and filter by your domain name. (Azure DNS, 2019)

  • Explain the nature of at least one user account that will have global administrator rights for the Mercury USA tenant.

Whoever purchases the tenant for Mercury USA from Microsoft will be the global administer by default. (Assign admin, 2020) They are the first and the mightiest. They will have full control over the tenant. This person should be your most trustworthy and knowledgeable administrator. You may assign other users to fulfill administrator roles, including global. But you should limit the number of global administrators for security purposes.

  • Users who have left the organization still have Microsoft 365 licenses while the new employees do not.

In order to transfer a license from a former employee to a new one you, as a Global administrator, must remove the license from the former employee. You can now transfer that license to a new employee. If you no longer want to pay for the license you must delete it after you remove it from a user (employee). (Remove or Delete, 2021)

Second Post (Austin):

  • Change the tenant name from mercuryusa.onmicrosoft.com to mercuryusa.com

Unfortunately it is not possible to change the tenant name. To complete this task the company would have to get a new Microsoft 365 license under the correct tenant name. If the tenant name is already taken than there is a 90 day buffer period before that tenant name can be selected as well. So this means if someone had the tenant name mercuryusa.com as there account name they would have to cancel that wait 90 days at least than the name would become available again (Cawood, 2020) .

  • Microsoft DNS servers to host the zone name

First you will want to make sure the DNS zone. This can be searched DNS zones and than select create zone. In the create zone enter the parent name of the zone that you want to create. With the zone created select all resources if there are a lot of resources than you can search for specific recourses that you would like. Next retrieve the name servers from the DNS zone page of the name of your choice (Rohinkoul, 2019) .

  1. In the registrar's DNS management page, edit the NS records and replace the NS records with the Azure DNS name servers.
  2. When you delegate a domain to Azure DNS, you must use the name servers that Azure DNS provides. Use all four name servers, regardless of the name of your domain. Domain delegation doesn't require a name server to use the same top-level domain as your domain.

Once this is done you have complete the task.

  • Explain the nature of at least one user account that will have global administrator rights for the Mercury USA tenant.

The user that will have global administrator rights by default is the person who signs up for the tenet subscription. Though the global administrator role can be given to other members from the current global admin or privileged role administrators can give roles to new users it is always best to not give out to many global admins as they have administration rights to everything (rolyon, 2021) .

  • Users who have left the organization still have Microsoft 365 licenses while the new employees do not.

To get the lenience back that was paid for for the former employee you will need to go to azure admin center, users and select the user that you want to block access to and remove the license from. click on the user and then select the licenses tab and uncheck whatever licenses you want to take away from them, than select save changes. If using group based license than just remove or add the user to the group and the licenses will be assigned or revoked automatically (JoeDavies-MSFT, 2019) .

Response to post #1 Steven’s Post

1. Changing the tenant name
I agree with you that the only way of changing the tenant name is by visiting Microsoft 365
account and particularly on the Admin page (Domains FAQ, 2020). It also right that you have
clarified the need to purchase a new domain. However, in this case, you were provided with the
domain name mercuryusa.com. You have not clearly explained the fate of the initial domain
name after setting the new domain as the default one. But still, you indicate that once a domain
name has been created, it cannot be deleted.
2. Microsoft DNS servers to host the zone name
I agree with you that you have to log in to the Azure portal account to create a DNS zone.
Likewise, the procedure requires one to input the location and name of the resource group(Azure
DNS, 2019). I concur with your last point that one has to retrieve the DNS zone after creating the
zone name.
