Public health preparedness is defined by the ability of a public health program, whether state or federal, to be able to adequately respond to a public health emergency by preventing, protecting against, responding to, and quickly recovering from public health emergencies (Nelson, Lurie, Wasserman, Zakowski, 2007). As of current events, the best example is the COVID-19 pandemic and the public health policies that have been tried to be enforced on the city, state, and federal levels. Two examples of public health policies are wearing masks in public and social distancing, as well as temporarily closing down businesses. On the very local and PERSONAL level, each individual must comply with wearing a mask when in public, social distancing by keeping a 6ft distance from themselves and other individuals, and only visiting essential businesses that remain open - pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, and grocery stores. On the city and the state level, cities and states must make sure that individuals are following these rules and adhering to public health policies. On the federal level, funding must be provided to researchers in order to quickly create a vaccine so that the virus can be eradicated and we can return back to normal as soon as possible. Both disease and disasters can impact national security, as disasters; whether it be manmade or natural, cause a sudden, unexpected change in the environment, versus disease, which quite directly impacts businesses and the economy if severe enough.
