Effective Communication - produce a Power Point presentation that explains (P1) and assesses
(M1) how you intend to use effective communication at your chosen placement. You should include a
diagram of the communication cycle. Your work needs to cover the criteria for Outcome 1 as listed
above. For this task you must apply each skill to your chosen setting and assess the

Task: Strategies to Overcome Barriers
For (P4) you will produce a Chart which could be displayed in the staff room at your chosen
placement. The chart will review each of the factors identified in your Assignment 2 Mind Map(s). For
this criteria it is required that you explain the strategies which may be used to overcome the effects of
these factors, including the use of alternative methods of communication; both human and with
technological aids.
To achieve (M2) you must produce a word processed Report. In which you review a wide range of
strategies assessing the potential for each to overcome barriers to communication.
Your report should include a Conclusion in which you evaluate the strengths and weakness of these
strategies used to overcome these barriers to communication (D1). You should include those which
are used to breakdown more common barriers, but also those caused by more challenging and
complex situations professionals working in health and social care environments face for example,
communication affected by mental health problems, drugs, alcohol or dementia. For D1 it is required
that you evaluate a range of positive and negative factors.

• A Report based on the observations of your witness and you own reflections.

Vocational Context:
As part of the BTEC Level 3 course you are required to complete a voluntary placement in a Health,
Social Care or Early Year’s setting. This assignment is based on two interactions you have
participated in while volunteering in your chosen health & social care environment. You will need to
show a good understanding of the communication skills you have applied both verbal and non-verbal.
You will then need to review these interactions making realistic suggestions on how any issues can
be addressed.
Key Skills:
IE - Independent Enquirers, RL - Reflective Learners, SM - Self-Managers, CT - Creative Thinkers,
TW - Team Workers, EP - Effective Participators.
Task List:
In this task you are required to participate in two interactions. For (P5) you must participate in a oneto-one interaction in a health and social care context. For (P6) you must participate in a group
interaction in a health and social care context.
For each interaction you will need to provide:
• a Plan
• A completed Checklist.
• A completed Witness Statement.
• A Report based on the observations of your witness and you own reflections.
Reflection is an important skill and highly valued in the care sector. Reflection requires you to look
critically at what you did and identify want went well, what went badly, how you could improve, the
influence of recent research and what (if anything) you would do differently next time. For (M3) you
must assess your communication and interpersonal skills in relation to each interaction. For (D2) you
must evaluate the factors that influenced the effectiveness of each interaction.
