The media focuses on crimes that will spread well, and grasp our attention. For example they use crimes that involve a wide range of audiences in order to appeal to mass numbers of people. Crimes that are more likely to happen to anyone are exposed greatly because the media knows that audience members are more likely to pay attention. Notice how weird and unexpected crimes are not shown and/or elaborated on, because they know it will not keep focus. I read an article by Sloop and Gunn in my communications course on this subject it is very interesting if you need further detail. :)
