2004 Monte Carlo SS. The Shift knob (handle) broken off of the shift assembly (automatic transmission). Luckily for now we are able to push down on a white plastic piece (plunger) inside assembly and it allows us to move from park to drive ect. We know we need to buy new handle, but what about this broken plunger still inside the assembly? Do we need to buy a whole new assembly for this? Trying to look up parts all morning. No luck. Links or part number would be appreciated.
sir, please don't feel I am questioning your answer, but I am confused because the white piece (plunger) you see, while still intact is broken off. Unless a new white piece comes with a handle just a new handle probably wont work because there has to be something pushing down on that white piece from the handle. Is there a white insert piece in this handle as well? I guess I don't understand the inner workings well enough of each part to know how they function together and make that plunger go down so the gears can shift. It seems to me that white plunger should extend all the way up into the top of the new handle so when you press the thumb button it will make contact and push it down.
