Science fiction goes hand-in-hand with religion. Both are considered fictional by some
people and there are rich, dense stories to be found with both subjects. Science fiction stories
combine science and fantasy to create multilayered worlds and universes. Religion uses faith
instead of science to create its stories. Science fiction expands on our understanding of religion
because it borrows elements from religious stories and teachings and adds a scientific element.
Star Wars is one of the most famous sci-fi series and is a prime example of how science
fiction can expand on our understanding of religion. Utilizing the film medium is a brilliant way
to take religion, something that is hard to fully understand, and put that in context with an
enjoyable, easy-to-watch film that most people understand. By comparing religion and an
immensely popular form of art, more people can understand the religious comparisons. There are
many parallels to be found between Star Wars and religious stories and each help broaden our
understanding of religion.
