Distress and Physical Illness
Distress means deep sorrow, pain, or anxiety. Distress is our body’s reaction to pressure
from a life occurrence or situation. What brings about distress to a certain individual varies
enormously to another individual. This difference is based on their economic and social
circumstances, and the surrounding they live in and their general makeup. When we face
distress, our bodies are stimulated to manufacture stress hormones that trigger a fight or flight
reaction and activate our immune system. This reaction assists us to react fast to fatal situations.
On the other hand, physical illness is defined as behavioral problems, learning disabilities and
physical pain from diseases. Many people, at some point, endure physical illness. Both the
disease and its treatment can impact the way we feel and think. This paper will discuss how
distress and physical influences, mental health, emotional health, and spiritual health.
Research laments that there is a powerful connection between mental health disorders and
physical illness. Individuals with severe physical diseases likelihood of suffering from
depression or anxiety are twice as much as their physically healthy friends. Physical sickness can
influence mental health indirectly or directly (Ohrnberger et al., 2017). This sickness can
predispose individuals to mental disorders in part since many physical illnesses are connected to
abnormal neurotransmitters’ and hormones’ levels that can impact mental health. For example,
Parkinson’s illness involves dopamine system abnormalities. Severe pain is connected to the
imbalance of dopamine, GABA, norepinephrine, and serotonin. Summarily, any physical
condition that brings about inflammation widespread might raise the depression risk since
depression has been related to brain inflammation.
