Arête can be defined as a quality of honor, glory or excellence given to a hero since the
hero has achieved the best there is to achieve. Through this concept, the hero is perceived to be at
his best and able to overcome all obstacles and trials set before them. Greeks believed that
leadership qualities and arête was inerasable (Homer, 2004).

With that said the character of Odysseus in the book Odyssey can be said to have
achieved arête in a number of ways. In Book five, Odysseus faces a lot of challenges after his
ship is torn into wrecks (Homer, 2004). He is however able to undergo all the challenges he faces
after that to emerge as a hero hence achieving arête. Aside from that, his character seems to
dominate over the virtues of honor and greatness since he manages to defeat Polyphemus hence
showing his natural arête.
