The steps followed in developing an action plan for the community
The community action plan for sanitation and water management follows along specific
stages as discussed below:
1. At the first stage, which is the introduction and socialization, it is important to understand
why this action plan is necessary. In this case, members of the community have been
suffering from health conditions brought by poor sanitation and lack of clean water.
2. In the stage, which is social and environmental mapping financing, the team seeks to
understand the conditions of the members of the community in terms of environmental,
economic, and social conditions. A map will give a clearer picture of the community’s
problems as well as priorities.
3. This is the stage where the team identifies the specific problems in the community, needs
that should be fulfilled so as to overcome the specific problems relating to water and
sanitation, as well as the resource potential (financial resources) accessible to meet these
needs. By the end of this stage, the team should come up with something more
comprehensive and practical than a mere ‘wish list.’
4. This is the stage where the community problems and needs are listed based on their
priorities. This should be done by representative members of the community since they
are in a better position to know what is more urgent than the other. They can also be
ranked according to the ability to overcome and fulfil them based on the available
resources (local and external resources).
5. A specific strategy is formulated. It should be chosen after considering the most feasible
strategy that can meet the needs as stated in the priority list.
