Elements of an Essay

In the essay, once more to the lake, E.B. White described the wonderful experience
shared by several generations of Americans; summer escape from city life to the countryside. To
convey his message of how time contributes to human development and growth, he blended the
literary elements of voice, style, structure, and ideas to narrate his personal transformation. The
decision to take his son Joe to the lake was to share his childhood with him, but as it turned out it
showed him the differences in their perceptions of life. Although the scenery of the environment
remained the same, the emotion he felt reminded him of the inevitability of death. The tone of
White’s voice in the narration portrayed a feeling of nostalgia. When an essayist uses the kind of
approach to sharing information about an important aspect of his or her life, the intent is usually
to provide the audience with specific and factual data that make them an authority on the subject.
Therefore, it was not surprising to observe that the description provided about the lake in the
essay was detailed and concrete.
