Identity Development in Young Adults

1

IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT IN YOUNG ADULTS
The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the personal and contextual factors that
promote identity development in young adults and explain the close link between a young adult's
identity development career and family. A discussion on what clinical mental health counselors
might consider when working with young adults and recommend treatment goals is also
included.

Young adults often experience specific issues that arise in the late teens and early
twenties, issues that may include developmental concerns, sexual concerns, or career challenges.
While Erick Erickson described the period of young adulthood as occurring between 20 and 45,
the Department of Health and Human Services in the U.S. considers young adult as the period
between 18 and 24 years of age (Reichl, 2013).

The period of young adulthood is characterized by rapid physiological, cognitive, sexual,
and emotional changes that influence identity formation. During this period, many young adults
move into adult roles and responsibility, such as beginning higher education, move away from
home, enter the workforce, or even start a family. It is often during this period that people
experience for the first time that they have to accept important responsibilities and make
decisions for themselves. These new responsibilities make many young adults reflect upon their
roles, both old and new, and how these roles are part of their identity (Smith, 2014).

According to recent research, one of the most important issues for many young adults is
to reach independency while still maintaining a good relationship with their family (Mahmoud,
Staten, Hall & Lennie, 2012). This need for partly independence may reflect the fact that while
young adults have identities with which they can differentiate themselves from their parents, they
are still bond to their families and do not see themselves separated from them.

IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT IN YOUNG ADULTS

future, such as obtaining higher education and forming intimate relationships and/or friendships.
While some find it easy to adjust to their new lives, others experience the entry into adult life as
overwhelming or even confusing. This may explain why many young adults experience
depression (Smith, 2014).

The problems that young adults face also steam from societal expectations. As access to
post-secondary education has increased significantly in the last decades and many young adults
have more options, expectations regarding what they should do once they have finished high
school are less clear than they were in the past. In the past expectations were usually determined
by the socio-economic status of the family and by gender expectations. Nowadays, the existenc...
