Retrograde amnesia is described as a type of amnesia where a person is not capable of
bringing into their minds the events that transpired before amnesia developed, although they
might be able to encode and learn the new things that happen after the inception. In the course
book, Gregory et al. (2019) explain that everyone forgets things and forgetting can be quite
necessary. When information is no longer useful, or useful or needed, it degrades in the human
brain. Forgetting happens when the memory degrades or dies. There are various kinds of
forgetting. One of the reasons for forgetting is interference which happens when other
information competes with the information that the individual.
The book continues to explain that when people forget as a result of injury or disease the
condition is referred to as amnesia. There are two forms of amnesia linked with organic injury or
disease which are anterograde amnesia and retrograde amnesia. Anterograde amnesia is the
incapability to recall experiences and events that happen after an injury or the inception of an
illness. Individuals with this type of amnesia fail to make new lasting memories. They remember
