Book Summary
Villasenor grows up on the gracious Southern California ranch belonging to his family in
the 1940. He envisions the life of a cowboy as he has been seeing in western movies. He also
learn the same way of life from the Mexican-born father, who Villasenor loves very much.
However, the reality of the life before him offers something, especially when he finds himself in
the unwelcome company of the American School system. In this regard, Villasenor fails to fit in
the company of the American school system. He finds himself highly disliked mainly because of
his limited English and undiagnosed dyslexia. The now famous novelist as well as nonfiction
writer faces many challenges in school where he has to cope with embittered classmates and
abusive teachers whose negative actions towards him threaten to draw away his courage and
confidence. To survive the hostile school environment, Villasenor choses to hold to his selfcreated philosophy of respecting who show violence against him. The only support he has is
from his close-knit family. Essentially, Joseph his brother provides Villasenor with one of the
biggest support. Nevertheless, the brother dies of unexplained illness considered rare. It becomes
