Sue and Jenny kick a soccer ball at exactly the same time. Sue’s foot exerts a force of 71.8 N to the north. Jenny’s foot exerts a force of 99.4 N to the east. What is the magnitude of the resultant force on the ball and the direction from the east

The resultant force is the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed by the vertical and horizontal forces.

Therefore we use Pythagorean's formula to solve:

Resultant force = sqrt(71.8^2 + 99.4^2) = 122.62 N

The angle formed between the resultant force and the east force is found as follows:

tan x = 71.8 / 99.4 = .722

x = arctan(.722) = 35.84 degrees
