Peer Education in
Prison

Executive Summary
• In this paper, the major emphasis will be trying to explore the
effectiveness of peer-based interventions in relations to
improving health in prisons.
• The paper will also encompass the analysis of positive and
negatives impacts attributed to the peer-based interventions
(PBI). Furthermore, the paper will evaluate the comparison of
peer-based interventions and other approaches such as
professional approaches to examine whether it is working
properly towards improving health in prisons.
• In accomplishing the task, the research conducted by Health
Services and Delivery Research (HSDR) will be the major point
of references to rely on the data and economic models of the
study (Jane et al, 100). Peer education in prison together with
PBI has had an impact on the life of prisoners.

Effectiveness and Costeffectiveness of PBI
• Effectiveness and Cost-effectiveness of PBI
• The research conducted by HSDR in 2014 indicates that PBI is more
cost-effective than other approaches (Jane et al, 100).
• Though the cost incurred in the provision of training of peer workers
and provision of services is significantly high, the effects to prisoners
and peer educator are very vital in improving the state of prison.
• Furthermore, the peer educations are effective in improving the
health status of prisoners.
• This can be attributed to the fact that when peer-based intervention
is installed, inmates have an opportunity to understand the need of
keeping away from abusing the drugs which affect negatively their
bodies.
• PBI contributes mostly in shaping the moral standards of prisoners in
a more dynamic manner. Since learning is a process, prisoners will
be acquiring more knowledge on a continuous basis as they get
advice from their peers on how to live a healthier life.

Effects of PBI on Prisoner Health

prisoner health, PBI helps to reduce the depression and anxiety
in distressed inmates.
In that, undertaking a conversation between trained peers’ and
prisoners allows them to find a platform to express their
dissatisfaction and improving the emotional health of a prisoner.
PBI increases the self-esteem of the prisoners. In that, inmates
tend to be satisfied when they get advice from their peers hence,
raising their confidence.
PBI helps in shaping good perceptions of prison environment by
inmates. Good perceptions are contributed by good friendliness
which exists between the inmates and peer-led providers.
PBI raises satisfaction of the inmates. It is easier to air out their
grievances when PBI is installed as compared to other
approaches.
PBI raises attitude of the inmates towards exercising and eating.
In that, when prisoners engage in conversations with trained
peers, they get motivations

Effects of PBI on Prisoner
Health
• Furthermore, it helps to minimize the spread of hepatitis C among the
prisoners (Levy, 402).
• The sensitization programs which is undertaken peer educators enables
prisoners to understand the symptom, prevention, and curative
measures.
• According to the research conducted by HSDR, there is a significant
decline in dead rate contributed by Hepatitis C when PBI is installed as
compared to when no approach is put in place.
• The research specifically articulates that there is 32.15% decline in dead
as a result of the installation of prisoners (Jane et al, 102) i.e. it helps in
alleviating the impending danger of getting the diseases.
• Furthermore, PBI acts as a channel for se...
