The main objective of a company’s advertisement is to ensure that the product or
service they are promoting sells. Advertisements are an essential part of a company’s
marketing and overall corporate strategy. Advertisements enable more people to recognize
your product and your brand name. Therefore, the essence of an advertisement is to create
strong brand recognition, and ultimately increased sales (Altstiel & Grow, 2006). In the
process, it also allows the company to attract more customers and gain their trust and loyalty.
Companies also use many methods to attract audience who are potential customers of the
products. A study conducted by the Obafemi Awolowo University, an advertisement is a
promotional strategy designed to encourage purchase, and ideally repurchase, through brand
loyalty. In this sense, advertisement is an essential part of the marketing and promotional
strategy of a company.
The ad that this paper analyzes is called “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like” and
is created by Old Spice. Old Spice is a leading brand that deals in men’s hygienic products,
including perfumes, shaving creams, and body wash among other products (Wasserman,
2010). This particular Old Spice advertisement showcases men who are using the body wash
and who talk directly to women audience, reaching out to their needs. The ad showcases
different actors and sports stars who are good looking and physically fit to promote their
body wash product. For instance, the ad shows former NFL receiver Isiah Mustafa in a
manner to show masculinity, humor and sex appeal.
The ad uses sexually appealing content to women that basically communicates one
thing: the ideal picture of a man, and what he should look like and how he should smell like.
The advertisement communicates this message by coming up with a sexual theme that is
designed to lure women audiences as well as men who it says should use their product to look

and smell good. The man will therefore become like the Old Spice man, who is portrayed as
the ultimate man in terms of looks, demeanour, and smell as well. There is an aspect of
culture in the sexual theme of the advertisement. An effective strategy of selling products that
are meant for men is by appealing to the senses of women. For once, women are said to
account for more than three quarters of all consumer purchases, particularly purchases
