Blood type AB is found in only 3% of the population. If 240 people are chosen at random, find the probability of the following. (Round your answers to four decimal places.)

(a) 5 or more will have this blood type

Since the population is large, we can use the normal approximation to the Binomial

with P(success)=p =0.03

Expected number of people with AB blood group = 240 * 0.03 =7.2

and standard deviation √ np(1-p) = √ 240 (0.03)(0.97)

                                                     =√ 6.984

                                                    = 2.6427

Hence z-score = (5 – 7.2) ÷  2.6427

                        = -0.8325

P(more than 5 will have AB blood group) = P(z  ≥  -0.8325)

                                                                   = 1- 0.2026

                                                                   = 0.7974
