Philosophy as a Theme in Anne Dillard’s Work ‘For the Time Being’
Annie Dillard’s ‘For the Time Being’ is unusual in the way it portrays life and death.
She poses the biggest questions of human existence. Why do we exist? How can one person
matter? Dillard approaches these inquiries, less to find the reply as to investigate existing and
matter. Whether she is investigating the hereditary slip-ups of human malformations or
Teilhard's palentological investigations in China she is herself diving into the importance of
being an individual in a specific place and time, encountering the historical backdrop of that
specific time and place. At a certain point she asks the question, "At what number do other
individuals blur for me?" (Dillard pg. 2) Is one passing more appalling than 1 million simply
because we cannot envision the number 1 million? It is unusual in the sense that apart from
being non-fictional it portrays a lot of philosophical themes in its narration. H...
