1. What is Turmeric?

Turmeric refers to a culinary spice that is a major ingredient among the Indians. It is a
rhizomatous perennial plant belonging to the ginger family known as Zingiberaceae. It is also
scientifically called Curcuma longa. It grows best in the southern part of Asia. The rootstocks
that grow underground supply both the flavor and pigment. The part is more of a stem than a
root. The flavor is harvested by either drying and grounding it into powder or grounding it
into a paste. It does well in areas with temperatures ranging between 20 and 30 o c. A
considerable amount of rainfall is required too. Over a number of years, the plant has been
used for cooking purposes. Scientific evidence has confirmed that the brightly colored plant
of the ginger family is capable of preventing disease. This is attributed to its ability to cause
an anti- inflammatory action. It has also been found that the plant has over 700 benefits.

The extract is obtained by soaking ground turmeric plant into 99% ethanol for 24 to 48 hours.
The solids are the filtered using a coffee filter and a colored ethanol solution. This solution
contains curcumin. To evaporate the ethanol, the solution is baked in a pan at 200F until it
looks dry. The solution obtained is gummy and more enriched in curcumin the original
turmeric.
