Introduction
Labor markets differ based on skill level, location, and type of work. Regardless, they
still share common attributes that explain the prime focus on wages and demand with workers
and firms as the market participants. Firms and workers exhibit a strong relationship in the
economic labor sector. Workers supply their labor to firms in exchange for wages, while firms
demand labor from workers in exchange for wages. However, employers who are profit
maximizers take advantage of workers based on the law of diminishing returns whereby
irrespective of the worker's contribution to the company, wage rates remain the same. Therefore,
union movements become a great sigh of relief if better treatment is achievable. In this regard,
this paper focuses on the anti-union tactics employed by Amazon in Alabama to ensure its
workers are non-unionized.
Anti-union tactics employed by Amazon
Amazon has managed to stamp out labor unions since its formation in 1994. Despite
workers agitating for change in its working conditions over a long time, their grievances have
fallen on deaf ears due to some of the company's undertakings. Amazon has dissuaded
employees from forming unions by keeping track of workplace unrest. Palmer (2020) dictates
that the company hired two intelligent analysts to identify sensitive issues, monitor labor threats,
and report them to the executives. Tracking employees has also been signified by purchasing
special software known as geoSPatial Operating Console (SPOC) for spying and analyzing data
on unions. Findings from the vice report indicate that contracted Flex drivers were applied on
closed Facebook groups to track any corporate staff strike organizations (Palmer, 2020).
Forcing employees to attend one-on-one meetings with the company's executives has
prolonged its fight against unionization. Union busting at Amazon is fueled by the company's
