Description

This is an introductory history class exploring the last dynasty of China, Qing, the West’s invasion of China, China’s resistance to the Western imperialism in two paths: Chiang’s Guomindang and Mao’s Communist party, Post-Revolution of China, Cultural Revolution, Deng’s liberalism, technocrat elite rulers, and the surging China’s global power under Xi Jinping. The class will explore how China and Japan differently dealt with the Western power and had dramatically different results at the end of 19th century. We will examine how Japanese Meiji government adjusted to the drastically changing political/economic/military situations in Asia mainly caused by the Western powers and became a powerhouse in Asia and became itself an imperial force toward Korea, China, and Southeast Asia. We will explore how the empowered Japan attempted to create a Japan-guided Asian bloc; how Japan strengthened itself through the times of World War I and II; how Japan ended its imperialistic scheme in 1945. We will discuss on how Japan was reshaped by the U.S. interim military government between 1945 and 1952; how Japan regained its economic power since 1952 to the present; how Japanese political system and constitution were molded by the U.S.; how Japan combined the old tradition and new Western systems of market economy and democracy. We will explore what and how Japan and China have achieved from 1945 to the present time of Abe Shinzo regime. We will also look into the political, social, cultural and economic problems that two countries have faced since 1945 to the present.
