women for the most part. In the time that this novel takes place, it was acceptable to treat females
any way you saw suitable. Celie had a very hard time growing up with having children and
having them ripped away from her, No one respecting her, and everyone treating her worse than
a lot of other females get treated. Some of the women portrayed in the novel have very
successful lives. For Example, Shug Avery. She is adored by all the men, she sings and dances
for work, and she isn’t a woman that allows men to treat her badly. In the book, it portrays three
different types of women: strong and independent, scared and mistreated, and full of life but
timid.
