HISTORICAL GEOLOGY AND ITS CONTRIBUTIONS
Historical geology can be defined as a sequence of events in the history of the earth.
(Merriam-Webster, 2021). It is also referred to as palaeogeology, and it applies the tenets of
geology to understand and recreate the environmental history of the earth. It also focuses on the
advancement of living things during different periods. (L., Levin, & King, 2003). As a
discipline, it has had many effects on man’s life. This paper looks into the contributions of
historical geology to global scientific knowledge and man’s understanding of his environment.
One of historical geology’s significant contributions to global science knowledge is to
provide a comprehensive understanding of the earth’s progression. By analyzing various rock
records, historical geologists develop hypotheses that explain past phenomena regarding matters
geo evolution. The discipline provides for multiple theories that encompass the evolution of the
earth over time. One such theory is the Uniformitarian Principle. The principle was propounded
by James Hutton and Charles Lyell, who asserted that uniform processes alter the earth’s
processes throughout time. (Uniformitarianism: Charles Lyell, 2008). Later on, proponents of the
principle have added that the processes’ intensity and speed vary over time. By applying the
above doctrine, man has been able to reconstruct and grasp the earth’s geological evolution over
time by simply scrutinizing the current geological processes in operation. Another doctrine
explaining the above mentioned is the Doctrine of Catastrophism. Proponents of the doctrine
majorly opined that sudden, short-lived, violent events, possibly worldwide in scope, have
shaped the earth. (Turney & Brown, 2007). Scientists have realized that catastrophic events
periodically break the steady pace of the earth’s processes. (Historical Geology, 2013). Also, the
doctrine of Actualism states that current processes comprehensively explain the past
geomorphological phenomena, despite the fact that the activities have had varied occurrences.

geological phenomena occurring now are almost similar to the previous ones.
