WHAT IS AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY?

An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited (http://guides.library.cornell.edu/annotatedbibliography, 2015)

WHAT IS A LITERATURE REVIEW?

The aim of a literature review is to show your reader (your tutor) that you have read, and have a good grasp of, the main published work concerning a particular topic or question in your field. It is very important to note that your review should not be simply a description of what others have published in the form of a set of summaries, but should take the form of a critical discussion, showing insight and an awareness of differing arguments, theories and approaches. It should be a synthesis and analysis of the relevant published work, linked at all times to your own purpose and rationale (http://library.bcu.ac.uk/learner/writingguides/1.04.htm, 2015).

According to Caulley (1992) of La Trobe University, the literature review should:

• compare and contrast different authors' views on an issue
• group authors who draw similar conclusions
• criticize aspects of methodology
• note areas in which authors are in disagreement
• highlight exemplary studies
• highlight gaps in research
• show how your study relates to previous studies
• show how your study relates to the literature in general
• conclude by summarizing what the literature says

Example of Annotated Bibliography

Waite, L. J., Goldschneider, F. K., & Witsberger, C. (1986). Nonfamily living and the erosion of traditional family orientations among young adults. American Sociological Review, 51 (4), 541-554.

The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited below shows no significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of nonfamily living.

School-based budgeting within district schools and state indicates a transition that trends
towards decentralization of school funding, with money following the child. The USA
faces a change period where funding does not target the institution, but rather the student.
K-12 school system operates the same way the higher education does their funding. The
higher education applies a model where the money follows the student, then trickles to
the public, or the private institution of their choice. The transition moves from the K-12
locally funded system to a system where parents ensure they choose the institution their
children get then the funding take place.

Student-based Budgeting also referred to as Fair student funding, does not equal the
contemporary funding model that had resources distributed to institutions based on
dollars and staff meant for given projects. The student-based budgeting ensures the
reimbursement of dollars to institutions depending on the percentage of the students
enrolled, and each learner gets funded depending on their needs. The author adds that the
model aimed at raising transparency, equity and even create flexibility in funding of
institutions. However, the student-based budget got implemented differently depending
on their needs because different learners and schools exhibit different needs.
