People view the world differently. How one sees the world might differ from how
another person might consider it. Though there are differences, some similarities about cultures,
communities and families are noted. Spirituality is a significant influence on how on how an
individual views the world. It, therefore, should be considered in appreciating how the person
sees the world. Some philosophical concepts threaten acceptance of spiritually concerning
healthcare in modernity such as postmodernism and scientism. Personally, the way I view the
world is based on my faith. However, my knowledge in science also contributes to my world
view. Both religion and science apply to me when it comes to the general world view (Puchalski,
2013).
Philosophical concepts and spirituality
Perceptions and beliefs of an individual are strongly connected on how an individual
connect with others and his or her understanding of life. It can be the real definition of
spirituality. The approach to spirituality is not religious but can be applied to treat patients
holistically. The medical field has over an extended period of time pushed for a sense of
appreciation of religion and spirituality. The beliefs of patients are not usually considered in
offering them care, but it is important that spirituality be found in the provision of quality and
better care for the patients (Puchalski, 2013).
Over time, spirituality has been proved to decrease the chances of mortality; increased
skills required in coping and also improved the period for recovery. At some instances,
healthcare and nursing practices have excluded spirituality mainly because of the philosophical
concepts such as scientism and postmodernism. Scientism bases its arguments on the point that if

an idea was obtained from parameters far from science, then that is not reality. Postmodernism
takes the relativist approach in that; a concept is about perception. The scientism and
postmodernism antagonize spiritualism because they do not provide room for pluralism and does
