HIS 1610 Paper 2 Rubric A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier Paper 2 will consist of five sections: an introduction, a section with subjects/themes all students will address, the selection of two topics/motifs chosen from the list provided below, a section that describes Ishmael Beah’s escape from war and Sierra Leone, and a conclusion. Section One: The introduction should give the name of the author and the book, a brief description of Beah’s life (his ethnic group, age at the beginning of the book, education, his home village, the event that led him to flee his village, who accompanies him, and to where did they travel?). Make sure you note the themes and topics you will discuss in your essay. Section Two: All students first will write a brief history of Sierra Leone, concentrating on its creation as the “Providence of Freedom” in the era of British abolition, later a British crown colony, the end of colonialism and independence. Note the political turbulence during the period from 1961 to 1978. Give a detailed account of the political situation of the All People’s Congress (APC) and the Revolutionary United Front (RUF). What caused the civil war? The “Chronology” at the end of the book will help you write this portion of Section Two. Next, discuss the violence that Beah witnesses as a result of the civil war and the change that occurs when Beah and his seven companions arrive at the village of Yele. Who are his companions and how does he know them? Why do they decide to go to Yele? Describe in detail how this shift happens. Do Beah and his companions have any choice in accepting the shift? Explain why or why not. How did the boy soldiers cope and normalize their situation? Section Three: Choose two of the following topic/motifs to discuss in conjunction with the events and circumstances of Beah’s life: Compare and contrast village life and urban life; which type of environment does Beah prefer? Explain your answer. The type of music Beah likes and why; what role does this music play in his life? The role of family and the various family relationships, either blood relations or not, that Beah experiences in his life. Beah notes “that the war had destroyed the enjoyment of the very experience of meeting people” (48). Provide examples when this comment proves to be true for Beah and how the civil war eroded trust among people in Sierra Leonean society. Section Four: Describe how Beah is able to escape his life as a boy soldier and his experiences after he is freed from the fighting. How old is he? Where does his journey take him? Where does he finally reside? Conclusion: Revisit the themes and topics you have addressed in your essay. Describe what Beah’s life reveals about the crises in post-independence African countries. Describe the Lomé Peace Accord. When does the Sierra Leonean civil war officially end? Again, the “Chronology” at the end of the book will help with this section.
