Prompt 1

Merrell claims that he randomly assigned rats to treatment groups. Does the data shown in the dotplots above support his claim? Why or why not?

Prompt 2

The National Health Survey uses household interviews to describe the health-related habits of U.S. adults. From these interviews they estimate population parameters associated with behaviors such as alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, and hours of sleep for all U.S. adults. In the 2005-2007 report, they estimated that 30% of all current smokers started smoking before the age of 16. Imagine that we want to verify this estimate. So we randomly select a sample of 100 smokers and calculate the proportion who started smoking before the age of 16. How much error do we expect in the sample proportions if the 30% is correct for the population overall? Use the applet and a give an error based on 2 standard deviations. Here's the applet for the simulation:

Yes, the evidence backs up the argument. However, it would be preferable if the experiment was repeated many times with the same result.Explanation: Heavy metal is known for its distorted instruments, emphatic beats, dense bass-and-drum sound, and powerful vocals. If you play metal to those who listen to country music, they will usually despise it. Putting aside certain people's lack of awareness about metal, we all have varying preferences in music, and some aesthetics appeal to us more than others.Subjects registered increased exhaustion, tension, depression, and aggression after listening to grunge songs, as well as reduced mental clarity, vigor, relaxation, and sympathy, according to a review of the influence of various styles of music. However, grunge was impossible to be these people's favorite music; a survey of grunge enthusiasts may have yielded different findings.Standard participants had slightly improved visual processing capabilities after listening to Mozart for 10 minutes than after listening to relaxation instructions intended to reduce blood pressure or silence.Overall, since Mozart is more calming than heavy metal music, the Mozart group was much quicker than the Anthrax group.

To start, we know that the effect is uniform per group. We can see that all the rats have good precision. Even though the rats were randomly assigned to groups, we can see that they have similar background. The data above does support his claim. The rats were randomly assigned and if they were not we could tell because if they were assigned in a bias way then the mean time would be different then week one. There also wouldn't be a discrepancy in precision of data.

Explanation & Answer

Here is the file with the answer. Please review it and let me know if it is ok.I didn't get technical with the numbers. Instead I explained how are random sample looks and what are the results of the experiment.

Merrell claims that he randomly assigned rats to treatment groups. Does the data shown in the dot
plots above support his claim? Why or why not?

I think the data suggests, to a certain degree, that the rats were chosen at random for each
treatment.
We can see in the chart from the first week that the run times in each group are scattered and do
not show a clear indication of which of the treatment is better. The center for the three treatments is
located around the 600 second mark and their means are relatively close to each other. This type of
distribution is what you would expect from a random sample, almost indistinguishable performance
between the three groups. This shows that the rats from all groups are new to the maze and the type of
music has little to no influence in their run times. There is no clear winner in the first week.
In the fourth week we can see the effects the type of music had on their run times. The data points
for each treatment are squeezed in a much narrower range compared to the first week results, and this
time the difference in run times is significant. The data points being clustered in a small range show that
the rats have memorized the maze. It is expected that every rat performs in a similar way when they
memorize the maze. We can see that the control group improved their run time significantly and their
range is much smaller. The performance of the other two groups seemed to be influenced by the type of
music. The Mozart group had the fastest run times, and the Anthrax group had the slowest. This suggests
that classical music helped the rats to focus and improve their memory, while Heavy metal suggests the
opposite. It made the rats be less focused and disoriented because they took a lot longer to complete the
maze.
Overall, I favor the idea of the rats being randomly assigned to each treatment group. However, I
think that the experiment could be done with a larger sample to improve the level of confidence of the
results.
