The diameter of an electric cable is normally distributed, with a mean of 0.7 inch and a standard deviation of 0.02 inch. What is the probability that the diameter will exceed 0.72 inch? Round answer to three decimal places.

Dec 5th, 2014

First, calculate z score of 0.72inch,

z=(0.72-mean)/SD=(0.72-0.7)/0.02=1

According to standard distribution table, when z=1, the area under the curve on the left side of z is 0.8643.

So the probability that the diameter will exceed 0.72 inch (z>1) is 1-0.8643=0.1357
