we must concede that small reserves such as central park in New York City are important to the city. However, how much good does it do in preserving the species diversity of the region?

Well, it depends on whether or not the species are allowed to grow wild or if it's cultivated. If it grows wild, it's more likely to preserve diversity, but if it's planned out and designed with what is grown, it doesn't preserve much.
