The financial statements comprises of the income statement, the balance sheet, statement of change in equity
and the retained earing statement. A balance sheet shows the company’s assets, liabilities and invested capital.
This can be data and claims about the existing resources. An income statement shows the amount of revenues,
expenses and profits incurred in a period. This is also an indication on the ability of the business to make
profits. A statement of retained earnings shows the changes in equity over time. This is the trend on capital
structure over time. A cash flow statement shows a company’s activities pertaining cash.
The kind of data available on the financial statement depends on the kind of the business involved and the
nature of the use of the statement affects the kind of data required by the user. Some people say that the income
statement is much more important than the rest of the rest if the financial statements. This is because the income
statement shows how a company generates its profits. The information in the income statement is also recorded
in the current dollar. Some users consider the statement of cash flow is being the most important financial
statements. This is because it focuses in the change in cash inflows and cash outflows. It represent a clear view
of the company’s cash more than the income statement. Therefore difference users use different type of
financial statement in making decisions.
The concern of the government is that the reported finance of the company is in full compliance with the
reporting and valuation regulations with a fair representation of the business taxable income. It ensures that the
regulations are followed in preparation of the income statement and the balance sheet to reflect true tax.
Owners and the shareholders of the business, the potential investors are particularly concerned with the
company’s ability to generate profits which is shown by the income statement. They also have a greater concern
with the payout ratio of the business and they deem it as a higher ratio is suitable for them.
