Description

Do you find yourself wanting to do something, and you just can’t seem to get yourself to do it? You surf the Internet, chat on your phone, watch YouTube videos...but you don’t do what you know you should do to be what you want to be.

We tend to hit the “inner snooze button” when faced with a decision. We wait to feel motivated to do something, but the reality is, most often we will NEVER feel the motivation we are waiting for. We are adults now, and it’s our job to parent ourselves. It’s our job to make ourselves do the things we don’t want to do so that we can be everything we want to be. But we keep waiting for motivation. Mel Robbins shares with us that it is simple – not easy – to get what you want. You have to force yourself. Anything that’s a break from your routine will require force to do. How do you do this?

Instructions

1) Watch the video, "How to Stop Screwing Yourself Over"

2) Take 3 actions per day for one week for a total of 21 actions in one week and write them down.

When you have an impulse about something you want to do, count backwards from 5 to 1 (like a launch) and then marry the impulse with a physical action within the 5 second window. Afterwards, write down the impulse and the action you took in a personal log. Practice this process of taking action and counting backwards from 5 to 1 for at least three impulses per day for one week, and keep track of your process. The impulses you choose should be for things you normally do NOT do (don't count something you get yourself to do already as an impulse-action). It would be better to consistently build the habit by taking 3 actions per day, but it's fine if one day you take 2 and another 4.

In your original post, comment about your experience with the Take Action! technique by addressing these questions:

1) Was the technique simple to perform? Was it easy? Did this change over time?

2) Was the technique effective in that you did several things (that you normally don't do) within 5 seconds of having an impulse?

3) How many of the 21 impulses did you end up accomplishing ? That is, suppose I get an impulse to exercise, but I'm at work and can't at the moment. So I text myself that I will exercise. Did you end up exercising that day?

4) Did practicing the Take Action! technique affect other parts of your life?

5) Did you find yourself acting on more than the 21 impulses?

6) Could you see yourself continuing to practice this technique?

TAKE ACTION TECHNIQUE

2

For two weeks, I learned that I need to force myself to undertake some activities. I began
using the 5-second rule impulse action.
1) The take action technique is a formidable technique to perform. It was not easy as
I had to face my negative and fearful feeling and tackle the obstacle ahead. However, as time
goes by, the technique becomes a simple task, and the body is adapted to the impulse actions.
Lack of guide makes the practice hard initially, but as soon as the body learns to fol...
