Professor James Walsh PSCI 3075 24 October 2016 Presente Reflection Although I have read this book before, I still enjoy reading the stories of the hardship and challenges these immigrants overcame. Issues such as drugs and discrimination have been addressed in the book and the response that these individuals got from the authorities. Narrations of real time events and the stereotypes that put the immigrants on the wrong side of the law almost all the time. The need for reform can be seen from this novel where individuals who are immigrants themselves echo their dissatisfaction with the current state of things in the country. With the elections looming, the issue of immigrant reforms and the things that ought to be done to ensure better accommodation of immigrants in the United States is a topic worthy of discussion. There have been issues in the immigration department, and this is the voice that Present, by Christina. One of the aspects that caught my eye as a reader and is stimulating is the legalization only aspect which takes down the rights of the immigrants and makes them prone to neglect and exploitation by the existing rules and regulation. The aspect of progressive social change is also addressed. Social change as a topic is more of the interactions with the people themselves and between the people and the government. The aspect of the immigrant reforms would bring out this social change to a great degree. State repression is an issue which is facing the modern day employee, the rate of repression is high, and most of the persons affected are the immigrants and not the native. This repressiveness should be resisted at all costs, so, 'Presente! 2 Presente 'Encourages. In my view, by resisting such negative influence and wrongful assertions by the native and government persons would lead to a better society free of the immigration policy fuzz. The issues addressed in this book has a personal dimension, it also has a social aspect, having seen the effects of immigration on people's quality of life. One of my close friends came to America three years ago, and he is still in America. He was lucky to be left in the United States because he had the education from a reputable university and was able to secure a job with an American company. He had, however, not arrived in America alone he had come with his mother and father. Upon the expiration of their travel visas, they wanted to have their stay extended before returning to their home country. The immigration officials felt that they were not supposed to be in the United States and decided to repatriate them back to their countries. They tried explaining that they were not in for a permanent stay in the United States but they were holidaying and needed some time before getting out of the country. The immigration department deported them to their country. My friend was greatly affected by the incident wondering whether by any chance the immigrants are lesser beings in comparison to the natives. As an immigrant myself, I can understand how these illegal immigrants’ feel. Although my family and I didn’t come here illegally, one thing most immigrants have in common is that we all moved to America for a better life, because the country we migrated from didn't give us opportunities that America has given us. I have knowledge Americans, mostly white are not very open to the idea of letting on- white be a part of the American society. I have come to realize that most Europeans can get visas to visit the US, but a lot of the times Mexican's can't get visas to enter here unless they have the right documents like permanent residency or something like it. Reading their stories made me realized how fortunate I am to not have gone through with these immigrants have faced. 3 Presente I always knew that NAFTA was a horrible trade agreement, but I didn’t know how bad it was until I read the stories of the people who were greatly impacted by. NAFTA allows American corporations to go into other countries and pay the locals about 25 cents per hour, in terrible working conditions, with terrible environmental protections, it allows America to dominate and control other countries. The trade deal significantly impacts poor country like Mexico.The only ones that benefit from the Nafta trade agreements are the rich. Everyone else got screwed over, especially if you are a farmer. Maria Duque’s story was absolute my favorite stories of all the whole book. Duque described how bad the Nafta deal really affected the people of Mexico. For example, she talked about how her family begins to struggle because of the Nafta free trade deal. I was not surprised me when she thanks, Nafta and Salinas for the giving her a reason to migrate to the US. I can relate to this. In my country, Nigerian politicians only look after their own interest. They could care less about the people who are really suffering because of the poor political decisions they have made. That is part is part of reasons why my family and I moved to U.S I never understood why Americans how a problem with Mexicans crossing the border, but have no problem exploiting illegal immigrants. The USA government allow companies to mistreat and not pay these people because they are illegal immigrants. The sad part is that many of immigrants do not speak up out of fear of being deported back to their country. I admire Duque bravery because she was not only standing up for herself and others even though her employer threatened to call immigration. When you are the victim to inequality and you want to see change, you become an activist. Duque, activists brought people together and built a community for people who are fighting for the same cause 4 Presente In conclusion, this aspect of repressive immigration policy should be addressed. Social movements have come up and expressed their dissatisfaction with the current rules on immigration policy and need it to be changed. Most of the persons affected are the Latinos and the black population. Although the government feels that this is for the general good of the population, the repressiveness of the policies calls
