California State University Fresno

Description

Option 1: Students will watch the documentary, “The Hunting Ground” (available on Amazon) and write a 2-4 page reflection paper (12-point, Times New Roman, double-spaced, no citations required). Students should identify two topics depicted in the film that they find to be the most interesting and explain why they chose these topics. Students should conclude papers by addressing whether they believe that rape/sexual assault/inappropriate sexual behavior is a problem on Fresno State’s campus or off-campus parties. If so, what should be done to reduce it? If not, what is it about Fresno State that makes it stand out in comparison to other campuses (i.e., why is our college culture different than others)?

Example topics (choose anything, just offering a few possible topics):

University actions to reduce the visibility of rape/sexual assault reports

Backlash against victims who report and advocates who try to assist (e.g., police, lawyers, professors)

Offenders preying on vulnerable persons

Alcohol as a weapon to reduce someone’s inhibitions for sex

Protecting athletes who commit rape/sexual assault

Party culture/fraternities

General “acceptance” of rape/sexual assault during college

Option 2: Students will watch the documentary, “Roll, Red, Roll” (available on Netflix) and write a 2-4 page reflection paper (12-point, Times New Roman, double-spaced, no citations required). Students should identify two topics depicted in the film that they find to be the most interesting/compelling/shocking and explain why they chose these topics. Students should conclude the papers by addressing whether they believe rape/sexual assault/inappropriate sexual behavior) is a problem on Fresno State’s campus or off-campus parties. If so, what should be done to reduce it? If not, what is about Fresno State students that makes it stand out in comparison to other campuses (i.e., why is our college culture different than others?)?

Example topics (choose anything, just offering a few possible topics):

Lack of empathy by the male party-goers; crass social media posts/texts

Statements by radio host (assuming rape did not occur initially, stating that the blog writer wasn’t helping the community by exposing what she found)

Victim blaming by adults in the community

Police interview with coach

Photo documentation of sexual assault, seeming perception that those involved found the events funny

Backlash at blogger for reporting the social media posts

Involvement of Anonymous

Protests that result in the admission of victimization

The Two Topics
The Hunting Ground, an award-winning documentary, directed by Kirk Dirk, gives
insights into the extent of rape culture within the institutions of higher learning (Dirk, 2015). The
film has covered several topics but at a personal, I perceive two to be most interesting. These are;
repeat rape perpetrators and the social stigma subjected to the victims. The two topics were
chosen due to several considerations. One, the topic on repeat rape perpetrators was chosen as it
reveals that the sexual assault perpetrators are still allowed to mingle and interact with
prospective victims (Dirk, 2015). This topic shows that the institutions of higher learning lack
effective deterrence mechanisms for sexual assault. The acknowledgment by the administration
that the cases are tied to a small number of repeat perpetrators shows that the colleges lack the
goodwill to deter and punish cases. Furthermore, this topic is quite interesting as it reveals
disconnect between colleges and the criminal justice system (Dirk, 2015). Here, one can
conclude that th...
