The Disaster of Pompeii
On August 24, 79 A.D., disaster struck the heart of Italy as Mount Vesuvius erupted in a
volcanic force that covered the entire area of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae. Completely
drowning the three towns in 18 feet of volcanic ash and rock, over 2000 people and animals lost
their lives. Mount Vesuvius had been rumbling for over 15 years, and people were still trying to
recover from the previous eruption in 62 A.D. Unfortunately, many people did not pay attention
to the pre-tremors and did not evacuate their homes.
Sitting close to the sea, the city of Pompeii was a huge tourist attraction and a haven for
the wealthy and elite. People flocked to this seaside port for relaxation, visiting the beaches,
brothels, villas and shops. Unfortunately, these three cities would have been packed due to the
summer months.
Eye-witness reports state the eruption of Mount Vesuvius was like “the world coming to
an end”. One witness, Pliny the Younger, watched the eruption from about 11 miles away,
across the bay from Pompeii. He stated, “It was a cloud of unusual size and appearance, like a
pine tree that rose to a great height and split off the trunk into branches”. (history.com). Another
witness, Mara, said “I was in my shop making jewelry when this great noise came from the
mountain. I ran to the window and saw it raining fire on the city of Pompeii. I cried out to the
gods to help my family because I knew we had to run”.
Mount Vesuvius had been a time bomb, waiting to explode. Why exactly did it erupt?
For over 800 years, the volcano had been quietly building up gasses and magma. On August 24,
79 A.D at about 1:00 pm, it just couldn’t hold the pressure in anymore and exploded, sending hot
gasses, burning ash and rock into the air. After about 30 minutes, the rock and ash began raining
down on the little cities, and they didn’t have a chance. From about midnight to 1:00 am on the
25th , the high column of gas changed and dropped, sending poisonous gasses, ash and burning
rocks tumbling down the side of Vesuvius, covering the towns. A series of 4-5 more surges will
happen within a 9-hour timeframe, causing carnage and death everywhere. (kidsdiscover.com)
