The present paper explores some of the most important elements that any drug program
should contain with the goal of providing a framework for the development of a new drug
addiction treatment and recovery program. As shown, a comprehensive drug treatment program
should include all the fundamental elements that pertain to diagnosis and treatment orientation as
well as several treatment options in order to respond to a diverse population.

In order to develop a drug program for prison inmates that resembles programs used for
non-incarcerated adult males, it is important to use the same elements that are used for any drug
program. These elements are the following: screening, testing, diagnosis, assessment, referral,
group therapy, individual therapy and 12-steo group. As explained below, each of these elements
must be used in specific contexts and play an important role in drug addiction treatment and
recovery.

Screening can be differentiated from testing in that it is less complex and can be administrated
