DISCUSSION 1: WHY SELL TO THE GOVERNMENT.
Selling to the government has been overlooked as a one of the best business opportunities.
However, key advantages can be drawn from selling to the government. To begin with, they are
more reliable and credible compared to other buyers. They are ideal customers for business as
they have a big budget and purchases majority of the conceivable services and products year
after year. The government even buys the items during good times as well as during recessions.
Another key advantage is that the government is mandated to work with businesses. It willingly
works with a business and will tend to often help. This gives a business advantages over large
competitors. They most important advantage is that the government has a vast money supply.
Therefore, it is quite difficult for them to be left indebted to a business.
Even though the government has made a serious effort in working with businesses, some
disadvantages can still be felt in the process. To begin with, a business has to pore over
documents that are tediously long in order to ensure that the government’s requirements are met
by the business. A lot of expertise, resources and time are also taken up by this research such that
the business has to designate at least one employee to specialize in government sales. An
alternative idea is working hand in hand with a consultant.
Yet again, the fact that majority of the government sales have a low profit margins is another

goods. The government has groups of procurement officers who are well-trained to negotiate on
behalf of their agency. Added to the fact that other contracts will face lots of competition, profit
margins are driven down.

shrinking budgets and also unsustainable debt burdens. In a world characterized by technological
intervention, rapid social change and macroeconomic uncertainty, the expectations of the citizens
of what the government ought to deliver continually rises. The government must therefore
construct more visible ways with less. This has therefore resulted into erosion of public trust in
the federal government hence less people contracting with it.
Certain measures can however be undertaken to encourage more people to contract with the
government. For instance, the government agencies must commit to an evidence transparency
framework. Other than this, the government ought to enhance or rather improve how information
freedom works in order to make policymaking more accountable and effective. Yet again, the
government should increases the transparency of data that it uses and also enhance the data
literacy for citizens, civil society, p...
