The appetite of societies to gain control over others intensifies day by day. However,
contrary to some decades back when war was widely considered as the perfect tool to achieve
such ends, geo-economics has today become central to the management of state affairs in their
quest to assert dominance on the global stage. Geo-economics is essentially a strategy within
statecraft that has largely been adopted by some countries to increase their influence over the rest
of the world.
Blackwill and Harris (2016) define geo-economics as the utilization of economic
instruments for geopolitical purposes. On the other hand, the definition of statecraft implied by
the two authors is that it is skillful management of state affairs (Blackwill & Harris, 2016). This
means that geo-economics is one tool used by statecraft to manage the affairs of a country. James
(2018) views statecraft as purely focused on cunning leadership aimed at maximizing the power
