American History X

American History X stands out as one of the most watched movies in the United States. It
was also rated among the best films in the Satelite Awards for best actor. It is one comprehensive
look into hatred, inner-city violence, and racism. In this film, one theme is evident- all actions
have consequences.
The movie starts with a TV news show where grief-stricken Derek blames his the death of
his late father on a laundry list associated with far-right targets. Later, we are made to understand
that the father’s death wasn’t the real cause of how he viewed things, but rather his father’s
views about racism.
Some of the most convincing scenes about Derek’s behaviors are the instances we see
Skinheads bonding. Derek’s brilliant speech is notably inspired by drug addiction, beer, tattoos,
and heavy metal. All Derek’s movement needs is a bunch of people that feel insecure. In their
world, the skinheads believe that races should stick together and that they are always at war with
others.
While the movie portrays the quality of build and creativity on the side of its actors, it also
has some weaknesses. For instance, the movie provides the audience with one character that is
three dimensioned. Derek, for instance, is a fully developed individual that goes to extremes. He
is racist and follower of a cult that throws him off his feet. On the other hand, there are other
thinly sketched stereotype characters such as his liberal sister and the caricatures.

All in all, this movie carries the day in several aspects, with one being its ability to portray
how negativity can be fueled by the racist mind.
