This week has honestly been very relaxing for me. I personally find drawing very therapeutic and enjoyable. Drawing everyday since school started has really helped me mentally because I’m currently taking a lot of classes and I find my mind at ease when I sketch even if it’s only for 5 minutes. My first three pages are Studio Ghibli themed because my friends and I watched each of those movies at those days and it just inspired me to make a doodle page with them. I decided to cut out prints from the movies to contribute to the vibe I wanna give off, which is a colorful and wholesome spread. I also decided to stick with the Micron Pens we received as well as the Faber Castell Pencils, I also used some of my Mildliner Pens for color! It was very fun to experiment with all of the different tip sizes and to shade with them. For the last two pages, I decided to experiment with the charcoal pencils since I’ve never used one. I’ll say it was very… very difficult because it’s very messy and very hard to control, but I’m looking forward to using it more in the future. 1.3 Introduction to Doodle Journal Requirements and Resources Why doodling? What is a Doodle Journal? How can I do it? This is a free-form assignment for the quarter. You are going to use a small 8x5 hard-bound sketch book for this project and it will be called Doodling Journal. Why this size? So you are not overwhelmed with a large white empty space that you have to fill. This video will get you in the mood for doodling. (You don't need to buy a printer and print instant photos to add them to the pages.) You can use any medium, add colors if you want, paint, glue cut outs, or colored paper... the sky is the limit. But, (there is always, a but) - you must fill one page a day. NO skipping! Spend as much time as you want, but make it a habit, daily habit. The Doodle Journal will become a visual documentation of your journey throughout this quarter. Art Journal Every Day 2018 · 5 Sketchbook Journalling … Other Approaches to Doodling And, of course, here are a few approaches that will be introduced in class that you may want to try… 1. Create doodle-experiments automatically. You can choose to think of an idea or concept or just follow your pencil. With these doodles you are not trying to draw a particular idea, rather, you are merely exploring the path your drawing tool takes. You can choose to return to the same doodle repeatedly or just do a one-sitting exploration. With these doodles there are no rules other than commitment, curiosity and a willingness to be surprised. 2. Explore materials for their own sake When you do this you are not “expressing” something, you are just discovering what certain materials can do. For example, what happens when you cover a page with crayon and then use India ink on top of that? Charcoal and ink? What is it like to draw with a twig? Or, paint with a toothbrush? What about sand and ink? The possibilities are endless. Though there may be some recognizable images with these experiments, they are not the goal. Exploration and discovery of new “visual vocabulary” takes precedent. 3. Place map-markers in your sketchbook. Where have you been? What has caught your eye? Take your Doodle Journal wherever you go, and glue any documentation of where you have been, i.e., movie tickets, traffic citation, bus pass, art supply receipts... Then you can transform these objects via automatic drawing. Similar to what you saw in the video above. Strategies and Approaches Strive to make your Doodle Journal a 24/7 part of your life. Carry it with you everywhere. Use any free time to make a mark on a page. The most difficult task is beginning and becoming comfortable with the process. Once you get going and realize that you don't need to be selfconscious about it, your Doodle Journal will begin to flow. A GOOD RULE OF THUMB: Spending approximately 15 minutes per doodle is ideal as this keeps you from getting TOO involved in your doodling on one page and makes you start over on a new page. You will find if you use this rule of thumb you will likely enjoy the Doodling assignment much more as it won't seem as overwhelming and laborious. Additionally, if you constantly change up your approach and materials from doodle to doodle you will find it much more rewarding and you will be learning about different materials as well. What to Do if You are Stuck! Throughout the semester you may find that you are “stuck”—either not knowing how to proceed or seeing yourself do the same thing over and over. If this is the case feel free to try these springboards to get you going. These are just general suggestions, in case Colored Background: Begin by applying your choice of color pastels/pencil/watercolor creating very smooth, blended transitions from color to color. Once that has been done use your black pens to doodle on top of the colored background. These explorations can result in a somewhat representational drawing or remain in an abstract form. Scribble/Fill-in: This process is very spontaneous to begin with then transitions to a more meditative state. Using a pencil or pen, begin by closing your eyes, then for about 30 seconds, randomly let it wander all around your page without picking it up. Once this is done, pull out your pencils or markers and begin to “fillin” any of the enclosed spaces/shapes. Continue this for a minimum of ten minutes, however, if you are so inclined continue filling in until you are satisfied. Geometric/Balance/Abstract: Tools—ruler, compass, protractor, French curve and/or any objects with geometric shapes. Using these tools, try to create a symmetrical composition AND (on the other page) an asymmetrical composition. This does not need to have a representational format, rather, you should focus more on exploring the possibilities that these geometric-shape making tools can create. Once you have created pleasing compositions you can proceed to filling in or “finishing” these explorations with a variety of materials and processes. Expanded Image/Collage: Select an image for each page— this can be predetermined or random—glue it somewhere on your page and expand on it. For example, maybe you get an image of an apple—you might expand on it by making the apple the center of an eye that you draw around it, or maybe you make it be at the mouth of a pig, or on a desk, or as a new planet in the universe… Grading The doodle journal will be evaluated twice throughout the course, at midterm and at the end of the course. Each evaluation will be based on one half of your doodle journal being completed (5 weeks=35 days) 35 pages by midterm; additional 35 pages by the final week. (This course is only 10 weeks, but if you want to complete more pages, go for it.) What you will do? Take a picture of one page every week and submit as a part of the weekly assignment package. During the midterm week, make a video by flipping through pages, zooming in to details and commenting on every page. You will post this video to the group discussion. (The same for the second half.) The Doodle Journal will comprise 10% of your course grade (70-100 points). The easiest points to earn. It should be a fun project!
