1. Describe the economic conditions of the 1970s, including stagflation and the end of
the post-World War II economic boom, and describe how Presidents Ford and
Carter attempted to confront the problem.
After two decades of significant prosperity that followed WWII, the American economy began to
suffer from several problems, some of which largely derived from the deferral deficit increased
during Johnson’s presidency as a consequence of the Vietnam War. As a lot of money were
pumped into the economy, the inflation rose and so did the cost of goods. During the 1970s, the
American economy was known to be in “stagflation”, a term that was used to refer to a
combination of rising prices and economic stagnation. President Ford tried to combat inflation by
urging Americans to reduce oil and gas consumption. Afterward, he cut governmental spending
and increased interest rates. President Carter also tried to combat economic weakness by
increasing government spending and voluntary wage. While the success of both presidents was
limited, Carter seems to have been more successful, especially after he took away some
regulation on several industries such as railroads and trucking (Zinn, 2016, p. 224).
2. Describe the perpetuation of 1960s-style activism and how it transformed into a
politics of identity in the 1970s.
The 1960s activism spread across the entire United States and outside of it. Many of these
activists were young intellectuals who were discontent with the economic, social, and cultural
life in the West and aimed at achieving significant social, political, and cultural changes. If the
1960s was more about civil rights organizations that represented the young and rebel, the 1970s
were more about politics of identity. The politics of identity are a type of politics that stresses the
importance of strong group identities as the foundation of political action. The politics of identity
may have emerged because many activists felt that the social changes achieved during the 1960s
were not sufficient. The idea behind the politics of identity is that groups should demand rights,
privilege, and status on the basis of a victimized identity. Such groups can include African
Americans, Asian Americans, gay men and women, or disable people, among others (Lassiter &
Niedt, 2013).
3. Evaluate the domestic policies of Ronald Reagan as president, including the economic
challenges the country faced in the 1980s.
Ronald Reagan came into power during the time when the economy was suffering from the
stagnation of high prices. Some of his most important economic policies were raising taxes...
